I talked to Alison Grunwald, author of the Whatever Next, Grandma! series.
What was your goal when you started writing?
Initially, my goal was to write some amusing children’s stories, based on my alter-ego, a nutty grandma who has magical adventures. The ideas for the stories flowed and I found writing them – and sharing them with my grandchildren – hugely enjoyable. As you know, I began a mentorship with you, and you woke me up to the possibility of a wider audience. Your confidence and experience in the publishing process carried me along.
How did it feel to achieve your writing and publishing goals?
I have been surprised and delighted at outcome; it has been a revelation that a creative idea can come to fruition and be successful, as Grandma and the Angry Octopus has.
What has been most useful to you in our work together?
Your technical expertise and understanding of the publishing process gave me confidence; I feel in safe hands, knowing you are paying attention to all the necessary details behind-the-scenes. You had to explain to me what it was all about when I ranked number 1 in one of my Amazon categories! I know that wouldn’t have happened if you hadn’t taken care to set up my categories and key words correctly (and if I’d been working on my own, I wouldn’t have known this needed doing.)
What’s next for your publishing plans?
I’m planning a festive story – Grandma’s Christmas Surprise. We are currently working on the illustration wish-list to share with illustrator Mike Phillips (enquiries at Beehive Agency) and will then be moving on to typesetting and cover design. I’m optimistic; and not a little stunned that my idea to entertain my eight grandchildren has turned into a substantial series with a publishing schedule. Grandma and her sidekick Gertrude the cat have truly come alive.
